Three students have been selected to play for the Scottish Universities Women’s Volleyball Squad.
Following three separate trials throughout the months of February and March, fourth year Management with Marketing student Agata Zaremba, third year International Business student Christina Flemming and second year International Hospitality student Veera Korjala have been selected for the team.
They join the ranks of the 15-strong squad which has been handpicked from the most talented University players from across the country. This selection process comes ahead of the Scottish Universities Sport (SUS) ‘Student Challenge’ which will see them compete against the Scottish National Senior and Junior Women's Teams on Sunday 17 April at the University of Dundee.
This marks the third consecutive year that Agata (26), who plays in the position of outside hitter and hails from Wroclaw, in the south-west of Poland, has been selected for the Universities team. This is the first time that Christina (26, offsetter) from Potsdam from Germany, and Veera (23, setter) from Valkeala from Finland have been selected.
All three compete regularly as teammates in the Robert Gordon University Women’s Volleyball Team which most recently achieved a silver medal in the Scottish Cup in February.
Agata also benefits from the RGU: SPORT scholarship programme which provides her with a support package of tailor-made programmes devised to support her individual needs, sports discipline and academic course requirements.
She said: “Being selected this year is great as the standard at the trials was very high. Also this is the first year that we have three representatives from RGU on the squad. I feel that this is a huge achievement for me as I just came back after a shoulder injury. I received great support from the RGU: SPORT scholarship programme during my time away which helped me to regain my fitness and strength quickly.”
Neil Brown, Sports Programme Manager at RGU: SPORT said: “Our Women’s Volleyball team have had a fantastic end to their season and the selection of three girls into the SUS team only shows the strength we have in the club. Agata has worked hard to overcome injury so I am particularly delighted for her. The whole university is behind the girls and we wish them the very best.”
