Top tips for success at Graduate Recruitment Fair

Students in Aberdeen will have the opportunity to come face to face with over 65 local, national and international companies at Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) Graduate Recruitment Fair on Thursday 1 November from 11am to 3pm.   This annual event gives students and graduates the chance to meet with a variety of recruiters keen to hire the best talent that is on offer from graduating students in the north-east of Scotland.

Increasingly the event attracts a healthy number of employers looking to discuss placement, vacation, part-time and graduate opportunities in various departments across their firms.

Hamish Walker, employability plus project officer at RGU gives his top tips for success at the fair:

“The RGU Careers Fair is a prime opportunity for students to directly chat with some of the most successful and influential companies all in one room. A chance like this does not come along often so as with any job interview it is important to prepare in advance:

Plan ahead - First things first, candidates need a plan of action. Ask yourself what you hope to get out of your visit to the fair. Perhaps you want to collect information on a specific industry, or to network and gain helpful contacts. You may even want to talk to graduate employees of specific companies, to find out more about the opportunities on offer there.

Make a good impression - Employers will be in great demand by students throughout the day, so aim to impress them with your enthusiasm and self-motivation.

Sell yourself - Know what you have to offer, your skills, qualities and experience. Be able to talk knowledgeably about your degree, the projects you're currently working on and your future goals.

Gather as much information as you can - Employers will be extremely busy, but try to use the fair to network. After you have talked to a company representative make sure you know what the next stage is. Before you leave a stand, take the name of the person you spoke to so that you can follow up.

Hamish continues: “It is important to remember that nowadays a large number of graduate roles are open to graduates of any discipline. Employers value a degree to demonstrate a candidates learning capacity but they are equally as interested in transferable skills such as communication and team working.  It is important to stay open minded and not be constrained by the discipline of your degree.”
