The impact of food on human health to be discussed at RGU

The impact of diet on human health and disease will be explored at an event being held at Robert Gordon University (RGU) this month.

Professor Susan DuthieProfessor Susan Duthie, Associate Head of the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences, will deliver a public lecture on Wednesday 24 May, which will discuss how much the diet of a person can affect their health and risk of disease.

The free event, which will take place at RGU’s Garthdee campus, is part of a series of professional lectures introduced by the university where a number of its experts discuss topical research issues.

Professor Duthie’s research is primarily interested in how nutrients in food, including antioxidants and B vitamins, act to prevent human pathologies including cancer, heart disease and dementia.

In her lecture, titled “Let food be thy medicine…did Hippocrates get it right?”, Professor Duthie will discuss the concepts of personalised nutrition and gene/nutrient interactions and the implications of “optimum nutrition” for the prevention of cancer, highlighting the emerging issue that excess intake of synthetic nutrient supplements might actually do more harm than good.

Speaking about her upcoming lecture, Professor Duthie, said: “In my lecture I will evaluate how diet acts mechanistically to prevent human diseases, including neural tube defects in new-borns, vascular disease and cancer in adults and cognitive decline and dementia in the elderly.”

The lecture will take place in the Sir Ian Wood Building at RGU’s Garthdee campus. It will begin at 6pm and will be followed by light refreshments.
