Student placement has good ring to it

Marcus McLernon (29), from Newburgh, Ellon, will graduate from Robert Gordon University (RGU) with an MSc in Corporate Communications and Public Affairs on Thursday 8 December.

After returning from 12 months working in Kuala Lumpur as a motion graphics artist following his first degree from RGU in Design for Digital Media BDes, Marcus was faced with the challenge of finding a job in the creative industry. To broaden his skill set and open up more opportunities within the creative sector the artist, who suffers from dyslexia, refocused his direction and set about studying for an MSc in Corporate Communications and Public Affairs.

Whilst studying for the MSc, Marcus completed a placement at renowned communications agency Fifth Ring, not allowing his dyslexia to get in the way of studying, exams or the work experience.

The placement led to a position within the Business Positioning department at Fifth Ring, securing a role as a junior business consultant. Recognising the importance of the MSc, the agency allowed the student to work part-time while he completed his dissertation before making the post full-time.

Marcus said: "I'm really glad to have been able to continue my career in the creative industry thanks to my further studies and Robert Gordon University and Fifth Ring, where I continue to learn about marketing communications from a B2B perspective.

"It was difficult at times during my studies due to having dyslexia but thankfully the student support services department was a great help and were very understanding."
