Student inspired by Highland landscape nominated for Scottish Fashion Award

Jill MacLennan (22) a Fashion Design student at Robert Gordon University’s Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, has been nominated for a prestigious Scottish Fashion Award for her fashion collection inspired by the Highlands.

Jill MacLennan Fashion DesignThe talented young designer has been nominated for the Graduate of the Year Award and will travel to the star-studded ceremony in Glasgow on Sunday 10 June, which will be hosted by supermodel Alexa Chung and attended by industry leaders, top designers, models and retailers.

Jill originally from Invergordon, is currently putting the finishing touches to her range of womenswear ahead of the 127th annual Gray’s Degree Show later this month which will see her collection modelled on the catwalk at the School’s Graduate Fashion Show.

Using the colour palette of the Scottish landscape, Jill has designed garments including dresses, tops and trousers for the modern Scottish woman. Evoking a sense of femininity, her work uses fluid shapes and hand-dyed materials.

She explains: “At home in Invergordon, I went on country walks taking photographs of scenery and was inspired by the natural surroundings to create my pieces.

“I wanted to avoid clichéd fashions associated with the country such as tartans and feathers and so created my own versions of Scottish-influenced design.”

She adds: “My designs include backless, flowing dresses and use velvets, chiffons and silks to create a subtly sensuous effect.”

During her third-year of study, Jill completed a four month placement in London with top designer, Erdem, working on fashion shows as a ‘dresser’ which involved last-minute hand sewing, embellishing and finishing outfits before going on the runway.

Jill is now preparing her work ahead of the Gray’s Graduate Fashion Shows where the public have the opportunity to view the School’s emerging talent in a special catwalk show.

She comments: “I’m really looking forward to seeing my collection modelled in the Graduate Fashion Show – it’s the culmination of four years of hard work and will hopefully be the platform to a career in design. Having worked backstage at London Fashion Week, I know the excitement will really build up towards the launch!”

Gray’s School of Art Degree Show 2012, sponsored by BP, is open to the public from 16-23 June. The Graduate Fashion Shows take place on Sunday 17 and Monday 18 June. Tickets for the Fashion Shows are priced at £10 and can be purchased at
