Sociology Professor appointed Head of School

Professor Stephen Vertigans has been appointed to the position of Head of School of Applied Social Studies at Robert Gordon University.

Stephen VertigansProfessor Vertigans stepped into his role in June 2012, having held the position of Acting Head of School since July 2011 following the retirement of previous Head, Professor Joyce Lishman.

Stephen is a sociologist by background with research interests in violence, corporate social responsibility and the energy sector, and Islamic movements. He has in-depth experience in strategic management, community planning, performance management and governance from previous posts in Local Government and the Audit Commission.

He began employment as a lecturer at RGU in September 2003, following teaching experience at the University of Leeds and Open University. He became Reader in 2007 and Professor in 2010. Drawing on his research interests, Stephen has become the leading force behind the university’s new MSc in Corporate Social Responsibility and Energy - the first of its kind in the world.

Commenting on his confirmed appointment, he said: “To become Head at a time when society faces tremendous challenges, perversely provides opportunities to make major contributions in areas where the School is particularly committed.

“Against the societal and global downturn our students, graduates and staff are working with the most vulnerable people, seeking to understand the individual and social processes that underpin contemporary problems and to help in the formulation of solutions. In essence we will be looking to further develop our contributions in helping inform local and national agendas that are designed to improve lives.”

RGU’s School of Applied Social Studies is a multi-disciplinary department incorporating Social Work and Social Sciences, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and continuous professional development courses. Further information about the School can be found at:
