RGU Deans address Oil & Gas Human Capital conference

Professor Rita Marcella, Dean of Aberdeen Business School and Professor John Watson, Dean of the Faculty of Design and Technology at Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen, last week gave a keynote speech on day two of the Oil & Gas Human Capital conference in London.

The Deans highlighted the success factors in university-business engagement as well as how to overcome potential barriers at the conference, which focuses on addressing the skills shortage in the oil and gas industry. The RGU speakers referenced not only the courses available and modes of study offered by the University, but also how corporate engagement can ensure the University meets the training needs of global organisations, citing recent examples of alliances with Shell, Chevron and Stork Technical Services.

The high profile event was attended by hundreds of energy industry professionals, brought together to discuss human capital in the oil and gas sector; offering human resources strategies, training and technology solutions for the global oil and gas industry.

The experts from RGU were joined by prominent speakers including Michael Killingsworth, VP of Learning & OE Upstream Americas, Shell; Stuart Payne, Group HR Director, Dana Petroleum; David Doig, Group CEO, OPITO and Paul Groves, Managing Director, Petrofac Training to name but a few.

The superior calibre of speakers at the event ensured delegates gained an understanding of the broader economic climate and how this will impact on businesses now and in the future. The conference aimed to demonstrate the best recruitment & retention strategies, training & up-skilling solutions, local capacity building techniques, and talent and knowledge management methods.

Professor Rita Marcella, commented: "The conference allowed RGU to highlight the opportunities available to businesses within the energy industry by way of partnership and collaboration. Through industry engagement, RGU will continue to strive to prepare students for the workplace with pertinent course content, flexible learning routes and industry experience."
