He was joined by Team GB, including RGU Pharmacy student Derrick Sloan who was selected for the Curling team.

When all of the nations represented at the Games had paraded into the square, International University Sports Federation (FISU) President Claude-Louis Gallien referred to Trentino 2013’s slogan – ‘Inspired by U’ – when he encouraged all participants to grab the opportunity to make the Games their own.

Ugo Rossi, the President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, declared the Games officially open and the Universiade Torch Relay reached its conclusion.

Brought into the Piazza by Italian Olympic champions Franco Nones, Giorgio Vanzetta, Matteo Anesi and Cristian Zorzi, it ignited Trentino’s LED zero-emission cauldron, the first of its kind and a symbol of the event’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The illumination of the cauldron was followed by a spectacular lights show played out on the wall of Trento Cathedral, before a series of performances which merged live dancing with visual effects.

The Ceremony concluded with the official song of Trentino 2013, Emiliano Ferrari’s ‘Wake Up.’

For Great Britain’s athletes it was a truly unique experience, but they also know that this is where the serious business really begins: 10 intense days of sporting action.
