Natalie fulfils promise to mum and secures dream job

An Inverness nursing student has fulfilled her mum’s dying wish that she finish her studies and graduate from university.

Natalie GroutNatalie Grout (20) graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Nursing from Robert Gordon University (RGU) on Tuesday, December 9.

The former Culloden Academy pupil was attracted to nursing due to her caring and friendly nature and advice from teachers and friends growing up.

During Natalie’s studies, her mum Annemarie Grout, put up a brave fight against cancer. She sadly passed away aged 50 in February, just as Natalie was about to start her final nursing placement in Aberdeen.

After some time off, Natalie returned to her placement in order to successfully finish the course.

She said: “After taking a break from my studies, I decided to go back and complete my course as I love nursing and caring for people and my mum would not have wanted me to give up.

“I later found out that she made my personal tutor promise her that I would complete my studies.

“Going back to placement was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do and the first couple of shifts back were really tough. However, with the support of my family, friends and mentors I managed to finish the placement and complete my course.”

Natalie, who has secured a job as a nurse at a hospital near Cambridge, graduated alongside her classmates at a ceremony in Aberdeen Music Hall.

She said: “Over the summer I was offered my dream job and since October I have been working at the world famous Papworth Hospital just outside Cambridge and am enjoying every minute of it.

“It was incredibly hard for me to leave my family and move away from home but everyone has been so supportive. I'm very proud of myself for graduating and being offered the job at Papworth and I know how very proud my mum would have been too.”

“I am very proud to graduate from RGU and am excited about what the future holds for my career.”
