Istanbul gold rush for RGU: SPORT scholar, Hannah

Hannah Miley

Second year Sport and Exercise Science student at Robert Gordon University, Hannah Miley, continues to rise meteorically through the ranks of international swimming, thanks to a stellar performance at the 13th LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in Istanbul over the weekend.

Not content with collecting the British team's only medals, RGU: SPORT scholar, Hannah, went on to set two new British records in the process. She opened her account on the first day of the competition with a bronze medal in the 200m Individual Medley (IM), before setting a new British record in the 200m Breaststroke. She saved her best till last, winning gold in the 400m IM, with a British best time of 4:25.66 seconds, just 0.6 seconds outside the European record.

As a RGU: SPORT scholar, Hannah is sponsored by the University's Scholarship Programme, and benefits from a package of tailor-made programmes devised to support her needs, sports discipline and academic course requirements. Hannah trains at the state-of-the-art swimming pool at RGU: SPORT, which enables her to successfully combine her training schedule with her lectures at Garthdee.

Neil Brown, Sports Programmes Manager at RGU: SPORT, who co-ordinates the scholarship programme and supports Hannah with her strength and conditioning, said, "We are delighted with Hannah's continued success on an international stage. She has now shown she is capable of taking on the best in the world, and winning, and we look forward to supporting her all the way to the Olympics in 2012."

Director of RGU:SPORT, Filippo  Antoniazzi, added, "The support provided through the scholarship is especially important in ensuring that Hannah can attend training and competitions, both at home and across Europe.

"We now have a growing pool of young elite sportsmen and women who are recognising that we can provide the support and the facilities needed to equip them to compete on a world class stage."
