In a spin: Budding jewellery designer creates unusual collection from CD discs

Robyn Reid (21), a 3-Dimensional Design student at Robert Gordon University’s Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen is putting the finishing touches to her final-year work ahead of the School’s 127th annual Degree Show later this month.

Robyn Reid CD jewelleryThe talented young designer, originally from Crieff and now living in Garthdee, has created a remarkable jewellery collection including rings, brooches, ear-rings and neck pieces from over 100 unwanted CDs.  In her work, Robyn hopes to highlight the long-lasting beauty that can be found in disposable products.

She explains: “Jewellery is traditionally made from expensive materials such as gold and platinum which means it is not accessible to everyone. I’ve always been interested in ‘upscaling’ or increasing the value of everyday objects by adapting them into something more attractive.”

After leaving a box in the School’s reception and asking her fellow students to donate old CDs, Robyn laser cut them into various decorative shapes inspired by old cast iron locks, keys, gates and fixings, and then hand assembled the pieces together with coloured Perspex and vinyl.

She adds: “By adapting the CDs, I have taken an item now in decline and given it a new lease of life. The reflective properties of a CD means it creates its own natural gradient of colours, which results in a unique statement piece of wearable art.

“I’m looking forward to the Degree Show and can’t wait to see the visitors’ reaction to my work. It’s not overtly obvious that my jewellery collection is made from CDs so once people realise they’re really surprised!”
