Golf scholarship graduate has designs on her future

Craigielaw golfer Jane Turner has one eye on turning professional following an excellent year both on and off the course.

Jane Turner Oz 2Turner, from Penicuik, will represent Scotland for the second time in a month when she tees off at the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship next week.

And the 22-year-old, part of national sports scholarship programme Winning Students, is also celebrating securing a new job with a graphic design company in Edinburgh.

Turner will graduate from Robert Gordon University - where she is also supported by the RGU: SPORT scholarship programme -  in July but not before she tackles the Carnoustie course as one of three players selected by the Scottish Ladies Golf Association.

This follows her victory with the Scottish team in the St Rule Trophy at the St Andrews Links New and Old Courses, alongside fellow Winning Student Eilidh Briggs, from the University of Stirling.

She said: “I would like to try and turn professional, but not for a couple of years yet as I want to give myself the best chance coming off the back of a brilliant season.

“Saying that, the last couple of months have been great and hopefully I can carry this form into the British Open. In the past I haven’t done that well, but I’ve improved again this season.

“I’m in the Scottish team for the qualifying round with two other girls and hopefully I will qualify high up to put me in a good position for the match placements.”

Turner also reached the final of the Scottish Ladies (Close) Amateur Championship, lucking out on the 18th green, and won all her matches in an East Division Inter County tournament.

Impressing in her new job is high on the agenda and Turner is thankful for the scholarship support she has received throughout her time at University.

She added: “The scholarship made things so much easier for me. Golf equipment and travelling is expensive and without the support I would have had to get a part-time job. Instead, I was able to focus on studying and finding a job.”
