Fiona puts Business Management degree into practice

Fiona Harris is celebrating success as she graduates from Robert Gordon University (RGU) with a BA Business Management degree at The Music Hall on Monday 8th December.

Fiona, who is from a small coastal village on the Moray Firth and stays in Burghead, is already putting her new Business Management degree into practice in her role.

The 44-year-old started work in a Medical Practice over 17 years ago and after completing a Practice Management course in conjunction with IHM (The Institute of Healthcare Management) and NES (NHS Education for Scotland) she decided to obtain a degree.

She said: "Having contacted several universities, I found that Robert Gordon University's distance learning option was most suited to my needs as I wished to continue my studies while working full time in Practice Management.

"I was able to transfer my credit points to undertake further modules in order to study for the BA Business Management and my work helped with funding and support.

"I really enjoyed the modules through RGU and was impressed with the distance learning set-up. The module coordinators each had different styles to suit the modules - everything from podcasts, forums and chat sessions to weekly work submissions, email and telephone support. They really make an effort to make themselves available to the distance learning students and are eager for you to submit your work regularly for feedback throughout your studies."

Fiona added that one highlight of her course was the support from fellow distance learning students.

"Although you have never met, you build up a rapport and a support network and any questions that you have can be put on the forum where everyone is keen to support and help you through the course," Fiona said.

She added: "RGU are really geared up for distance learning and make it so accessible as long as you are willing to put in the effort, they encourage and support you every step of the way and are very flexible so that you can submit the modules at a pace that suits you."

Fiona is very happy working at Moray Coast Medical Practice and loves the team there.

She concluded: "The management and GPs are very supportive of their staff and keen to provide training in all aspects of healthcare, from admin and management to clinical coursework.

"They have developed my role into all aspects of Practice Management and would be supportive of my progression into a Practice Manager's role elsewhere in the future - I can't wait to see what the future brings!"
