Energy Awareness Campaign launched across campus

The University's new Energy Awareness Campaign has been launched across campus and aims to encourage staff, students and visitors to the University to consider the organisation's impact on the environment.

Energy Awareness CampaignOn Friday 25 March, Professor Peter Robertson, Vice-Principal (Research and Commercialisation) and Bill Somerville, Director of Estates and Property Services, unveiled new energy awareness graphics across campus.

The new graphics, installed in various locations across the University feature ‘Energy Performance Statistics' for each building, showing how much gas and electricity is used.

These statistics give an accurate account of how each building compares to previous years' gas and electricity usage. The graphics signify the first stage in the campaign which aims to educate staff and students on how to save energy whilst working and studying on campus.

Bryan McAlpine, Carbon Energy Officer at Estates and Property Services, explains:

"The University is highlighting its commitment to energy reduction by producing visible regular energy data updates for staff, students and visitors in various buildings across the University including ABS, Central Services, Gray's School of Art and RGU: Union.

"The Estates team hope to raise awareness of energy usage across the University and to set achievable energy reduction and cost saving targets. Before we set these targets, we felt it was important to show existing levels of usage."

The University is also set to run a number of sustainability and energy awareness events and schemes over the coming year, and recently took part in ‘Earth Hour' on Saturday 26 March.

‘Earth Hour' saw millions of people across the globe turn off the lights between 8.30-9.30pm. The University joined organisations from London to Sydney, Toronto to Singapore, and close its Faculty of Health and Social Care, Central Services Building, Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment, and Schoolhill buildings for the hour in an attempt to save energy.
