Coastal living inspires fashion student

An Elgin student has taken inspiration from living near the sea to create a fashion collection that has gone on display in Aberdeen.

Kat Andrews Degree Show 2015Kat Andrews (22), a fashion and textiles student at Gray’s School of Art, saw her work go on display at the School’s annual Degree Show from June 20 to 27.

The former Elgin Academy pupil has based her collection, called ‘BAIT’, on traditional fisherman knotting techniques, using rope and silk matka to create her unique designs.

She said: “I wanted to have the chance to create my own collection and be able to show how fashion can be influenced by anything.

“Growing up near the sea, I’ve found a really relaxing and peaceful way of drawing inspirations from colours in the sea to the sky and shapes from the sea life. I'm so pleased with how my work looks.”

Kat will be heading to New Designers in London following the Degree Show, to further showcase her collection along with more than 3,000 other design graduates from all over the UK.

She added: “It will be such an amazing opportunity to show my work alongside other graduates around the country.”

Reflecting on her time at Gray’s, Kat said the four years she spent there has had a big impact on her way of working and now hopes to land a job she loves within the industry.

“My time at Gray’s has completely changed how I look and develop my work,” she said. “Gray’s has given me the chance to express my design identity and see it evolve.”

It isn’t just an eye for fashion that Kat has however, as she is also aiming to start up her own business after she graduates in July.

The business brand known as ‘A.nimals’, is a collection of soft animals all handcrafted by Kat herself. The range so far consists of a rabbit, fox, sloth, panda and a lion, all in a variety of sizes.

She added: “You are able to personalise the toys, right down to their eye colour and include initials or messages on the animal of your choice.”

While Kat continues to work on her business, she is also aiming to add to her experience by securing internship roles or going into fashion buying.
