CIOB award sees Mercy end uni career on a high note

An international student who has spent a year away from her husband and children to gain a postgraduate degree is ending her time at Robert Gordon University (RGU) on a high note after being awarded an industry prize in recognition of her academic achievements.

Mercy OgunnusiMercy Ogunnusi (40), who has just received her MSc Construction Project Management degree with Distinction, was awarded the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) prize at a special ceremony held at RGU’s Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment last week.

Mercy, from Lagos, Nigeria, said: “The award is a great honour bestowed on me and I would like to thank the CIOB for this recognition. This award, for me, is a celebration of enthusiasm, commitment and hard work.

“It is also a reward for my entire family especially my husband and three children who supported me during the period.”

She added: “Being alone here without my husband and children was sometimes emotionally stressful for me. With self-motivation, commitment, focus and hard work, I pressed on, determined that my effort will not only bring success to me, but also serve as a source of inspiration to my children.”

Explaining what had driven her to study at RGU, Mercy said: “The desire and continuous motivation to further improve my skills in specific areas of project management was the key driver for my decision to study the course.

“A Masters degree in this course affords me the opportunity to be one of the very seasoned professionals required by my nation in meeting its desire for housing and infrastructure development.

“My time at RGU is a great experience that I will continue to cherish. The school is rich with great academic resources, both human and material, made available for students’ learning and faculty members are highly experienced and exceptional in their field of specialization.”

Mercy, who acted as the course’s class representative, said that in addition to the classroom teaching she also gained a lot from a site visit which enabled the students to appreciate key concepts in construction and project management.

She now hopes to establish an international Construction Project Management outfit.
