Physiotherapy - Pre-registration MSc

1. Overview

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to practice physiotherapy via an accelerated programme which builds on prior learning and experience.

It is a two year course with an exciting and varied mix of academic and clinical learning.

2. What you will study

There is a firm emphasis on the development of clinical reasoning and practical skills throughout the course.

Academic modules have been developed to allow students to develop strong core assessment and treatments skills and a deeper knowledge of core areas such as exercise prescription and health improvement theory. Integrating the core practice areas of cardiovascular respiratory, neurology and musculoskeletal encourages students to think holistically about their patients to embed this in their practice.

3. Entry Requirements

Applicants typically possess a Bachelors undergraduate degree in a science subject, such as biological, or sports science, and should contain human anatomy and physiology with a 2:1 or above classification, or a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 Scale, or equivalent.

Experience of the research process is also an essential requirement for the course. Relevant work experience in the field of Physiotherapy and healthcare would be desirable.

A Doctorate of Physiotherapy (DPT) qualification is now the minimum requirement for licensure and practice in the USA. The DPT course at RGU has different entry requirements, please see the course page for details.  PLEASE NOTE: There is no transfer option onto the DPT course at RGU once enrolled for the MSc (Pre-registration) Physiotherapy Course.

Applicants from the USA will also be required to demonstrate that they have undertaken all the prerequisite subjects in accordance with recommendations adopted by the Educational Section of the American Physical therapy Association. Further information for US applicants:

Applicants from other countries should hold an equivalent award in a relevant subject.

Applicants with a non-science or health related background are welcome to apply, and may be required to complete pre-requisite study in anatomy and physiology prior to commencing their studies on the MSc programme. These applications will be dealt with on an individual basis. All places upon the course are subject to interview.

This course is not appropriate for Qualified Physiotherapists who wish to undertake a postgraduate degree.


All applications are screened and if suitable, will be offered an interview. Interviews are held face-to-face in locations UK at the RGU campus and in North American Locations.  If invited to interview, attendance is mandatory to be considered for a place on the course. 

We accept applications all year round, however, if you wish to be considered for a January 2019 place please ensure your complete application is submitted at least one month prior to the last scheduled interview dates (Home/EU - beginning of August 2018, North America - July 2018).  Applications received after this may not be considered for a January 2019 place.

Applications must be screened prior to the offer of an interview. We operate a rolling application programme however those received too late to be considered for the last interview dates of the year (January 2019 entry) will be considered for a January 2020 intake.

English Language

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 7.0 overall, with no component lower than 6.5, or an equivalent.

* All entry requirements listed here should be used as a guide and represent the minimum required to be considered for entry. A small number of courses require higher levels, but this will be stated explicitly on your offer letter.

4. Placements and Accreditations

On completion of the course, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. 

Students undertake six placements which are spread over the duration of the course. The final placement is an elective which is arranged by students themselves; this can be undertaken in any country if the required conditions are met. 

Please note if you are a student from the USA who is planning to apply for a Federal Loan, none of your placements can take place in the USA. This is in order to comply with the requirement of the FERPA.

Course fees are reviewed periodically and so are subject to change for new applicants. All tuition fees are fixed for the duration of a course at the rate confirmed in your offer letter. You will also be liable to pay a graduation fee of £40 before receiving a University award.

7. Prospects

Students who complete their MSc (Pre-registration) Physiotherapy degree at RGU and wish to pursue working within the United States are welcome to apply to upgrade their MSc to a Doctorate of Physiotherapy (DPT).
