Project title: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modelling of Sand Transport in Multiphase Flow in Pipeline Bends.

Start date: October 2012

Sand production with oil and gas is a major problem in production operations. An inherent challenge with sand production is the deposition of the sand particles inside flowlines (pipelines). Sand particle deposition could result in sand bed formation in the flowline which could hamper continuous production. Previous studies on sand transport in multiphase flow have focused on flow in horizontal, inclined and pipe with high angle of bend. There is a real paucity of research in flowline bend (dip) that represents a typical gradient of offshore seabed undulation.

The aim of this research is to investigate sand transport phenomenon in multiphase flowline, with a special emphasis on flowline dip. This research will lead to the development of more accurate flow assurance model to predict the critical sand deposition velocity, and estimate sand bed height formation in flowline dip. The research investigation will be carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) multiphase eulerian-eulerian modelling techniques. Simulations will be carried out to investigate the effects of various angles on sand mobility in flowline dip.
