Laura graduated from Leeds Beckett University (formally Leeds Metropolitan University) with a BSc (Hons) degree in Sport and Exercise Science before going on to do her diploma in Sports Massage Therapy. Following her graduation Laura worked in the fitness industry developing her understanding of the both the operational and strategic sides of the business, whilst also developing her experience within the field of sports therapy by linking with Barnsley Football to provide sports therapy pre and post training and matches. Having worked in various roles within the sport and fitness industry, from coaching and teaching to personal training, sports therapist and exercise referral instructor, Laura has a breadth of industry related experience that she uses to help develop the modules that she leads on the course, specifically Exercise Programming and Delivery for the General Population, Health Improvement and Exercise Prescription and Delivery for Varying Populations
Laura’s area of expertise is Exercise for Health an area that she is extremely passionate about and the underlying theme for her ongoing PhD studies. Having worked within the sports and fitness industry in various forms for over a decade, working with a range of individuals from elite athletes to special populations, Laura has developed a keen interest in the role of sport, exercise and physical activity in addressing the health challenges facing the modern world. Since joining RGU over 5 years ago Laura has developed opportunities for students to enhance and apply their theoretical knowledge and understanding through the introduction and development of exercise clinics that link students with specific populations within the community who would benefit from condition focused exercise interventions.
Laura has recently been appointed to the role of Course Leader for both the BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science course and the BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching course whilst also being the Course Development Lead for the new MSc Exercise, Health and Wellness Coaching course. Within this role Laura will be working to ensure that the courses maintain the high standards that have been developed over recent years, to ensure that we continue to produce quality graduates that are ready for employment in an exciting and developing industry.
