Elaine trained as an Occupational Therapist in Edinburgh, qualifying in 1991. Since then she has worked mainly in Tayside in areas of physical rehabilitation, specialising in neurorehabilitation. Her areas of interest include cognitive and vocational rehabilitation, and has participated in training in the use of the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) and the Valpar Functional Capacity Evaluation. For many years she has been involved with Headway, a support group for individuals with acquired brain injury and their carers, and is regional representative for the Scottish North region of the National Association of Neurological Occupational Therapists.

Since joining the University in 2001, she has been actively involved in teaching a variety of subjects, but is module leader for the undergraduate teaching for neurology, and has maintained clinical links with neurosciences in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
