Head of School of Engineering at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen since 2007. Previously Head of Mechanical Engineering at Heriot Watt University. Experience includes leading research funded by EPSRC and various EU programmes. Working with Industry including Nissan, ManB&W, Stork Engineering and Shell. Fellow of Energy Institute (FEI). CEng and member of the local Branch committee of EI. Have been member of committees at NSRI, OGIC and ETP.

Research since 1985 started in Structural Vibration in buildings, cars, aircraft structures and ships. This developed into applications of novel Acoustic Emission (AE) sensors and sensor systems for machine monitoring and then applications in machine operation, management and monitoring. Most recent research includes Identification of sand particles using AE, chemical bond quality using AE and optimisation of offshore wind turbine monitoring, maintenance and operation.
