David has extensive experience of architecture education in the UK, and has been invited as keynote speaker and to deliver workshops in a number of other countries. He has been involved in the professional validation process of the RIBA since 2003, involving schools on four continents, and has undertaken overseas consultancy for organisations such as the UIA and RIAI. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
He has served as an External Examiner at 12 institutions throughout the UK and overseas, has participated in and chaired competition juries internationally, and was elected a professional member of the Society of Scottish Artists in 2000.
Research activities and outputs have focused on aspects of architectural education, with particular reference to studio-based learning, its underpinning pedagogies, and student mental health and well-being. Innovative course development included leading the establishment of unique awards at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
With well over a decade of departmental leadership, he has extensive experience of academic leadership, as well as experience of corporate governance.
David was involved in practice in Cambridge from 1985-92, leading a number of prestigious projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
Head of The Scott Sutherland School.
David leads a multi-disciplinary school that contains a number of subjects relating to the design, realisation and performance of the built environment. These include Architecture, Architectural Technology, Surveying, and Construction Project Management. The School offers courses at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, as well as Research degrees. It also undertakes research and consultancy, engaging both the public and private sectors, and has a growing community engagement and public outreach profile.
David completed his PhD in 2009 on the subject of Architecture Education and was appointed Professor in October 2013.
David has been Head of The Scott Sutherland School since 2006, having joined Robert Gordon University in 1992; prior to this he was an Architect in practice in Cambridge.
David is actively involved in architectural education nationally, principally through work with the RIBA. He has been involved in their validation process on four continents, and has acted as a consultant internationally for the UIA.
