Sue Fairburn joined the school in 2007, having previously worked in Knowledge Exchange and Research Management for the University of Aberdeen.
She is co-pilot of City As A Spaceship (CAAS) and was a co-founder of a social innovation (Design for Development). Her research activity spans design for extreme environments, design as knowledge exchange, and various projects into collaborative working and design education. Educated in Western Canada, Sue relocated to Scotland in 2005 to take up a Research Management post in international health. Her research and design practice over the past 15 years have seen her involved with a variety of disciplines and environments – bridging Design and Science.
Sue is an educator and designer with a background in human sciences. She has over 15 years experience teaching and writing curriculum on topics such as design methods, research methods, design for social innovation, design for extremes, and cross-disciplinary practices.
Duties and Responsibilities
Her teaching responsibilities at Gray’s School of Art include modules within Contextual and Critical Studies and post-graduate student supervision.
MEDes (Industrial Design)
MSc (Environmental Physiology) BSc Kinesiology (Hons)
Her research programme focuses on examining how extreme environments challenge our survivability and response to the unfamiliar – and designs to mitigate. Her interests bridge design and science; with current projects including the exploration of reciprocities between living in space and living in dense urban settings, textile thinking, researching future bodies; and opportunities for art and design to enhance unlikely settings in developing economies.
Her interests include scenario-based methodology, trans-disciplinary working and all things creative and design-related. She has collaborated with a range of disciplines, including: epidemiologists, pharmacists, secondary school teachers, astronauts, commercial divers, architects, entrepreneurs, engineers, food futurists and more.
She has her own design consultancy. She combines practice with research. Recent design projects include Collective Futures (2012), Design Specks (2013), Future Textile Visions (2013) and The Big Clean Bus (2014).
Her current research projects include: City As A Spaceship (2016), BUKA (2016), Textile Thinking (2016) and SurvivalLab (2017).
