Ben is a lecturer in Digital Design and Manufacture at Gray’s School of Art.  Hi is Course Leader for the Three-Dimensional Design course. He works alongside Daniel Sutherland (Product Design), Naomi Mcintosh (Jewellery) and Mathew Willcock (Ceramics) across all four stages of the course. This combination of disciplines coming together, for is what makes this course so exciting and special for Ben. With support from lecturers with a broad range of skills and interests alongside the fantastic technical team, our students gain hands on experience in a wide range of making processes in combination with a solid foundation in design process. Our students evolve and develop their own design identity helping to navigate/create their own pathway as an emerging designer. As a product designer Ben believes strongly in democratising digital fabrication and pushing students to explore possibilities with our fantastic resources and innovate through combining hand craft with digital fabrication.

His background is in commercial product design engineering, where he has always blurred the lines between disciplines and is passionate about interdisciplinary approaches within design.  He continues to be actively involved in commercial work at Gray’s both locally and nationally.

Funding

Commercial Design Project: Scoping and redesign of a disability sports playing equipment that has been in use for over 20 years to facilitate future growth. Human centred design principles through delivered ethnographic workshops underpinning project scoping and development. Design for mass manufacture.

Zero Waste Scotland: Consultancy Project focussed on carrying out a plastics audit in Orkney to gain insight into the feasibility of establishing an Origin Hub.
