Project title: Development of a novel tracer for rapid assessment of soil and water contamination towards sustainable remediation.
Start date: October 2010
Erosion of soil from agriculturally managed land constitutes both a loss of the soil resource and a means of transporting sediment-bound contaminants from land to watercourses and potentially back to floodplains. An important aspect in controlling erosion is knowledge of the source, which once identified can be tackled with best management practice. My project, in collaboration with the James Hutton Institute, involves the synthesis and characterisation of a novel particle tracer and the investigation of its transport behaviour and interaction with soils and water.
