Thesis title: Combined assessment and development of a novel diagnostic tool for condition monitoring of adhesively bonded sandwich structures.
Adhesively bonded joints are quickly gaining popularity across many industry sectors due to their high strength, low weight and favourable stress distribution. They are also a crucial factor in composite structures where conventional mechanical fasteners are unsuitable.
A limiting factor in the current application of adhesive bond technology is the potential for in situ quality assessment and condition monitoring of joints. This project aims to address this issue through development of condition monitoring techniques, primarily focussing on the application of acoustic emission and ultrasound methods.
