Research project: Design for Social Intervention

Start date: 01/10/2013

Design is a recognized approach for addressing social challenges and combating crime (UK Design Council 2011). With a growing evidence base in socially responsible design, this research seeks to specifically examine the role of design in facilitating community engagement through diversionary tactics in areas of urban deprivation. In this instance, there is the opportunity for StreetsportRGU to serve as a well-recognized example of a how such a programme, in which design has facilitated a highly visible and active multi-partner community-based approach (i.e. as a case study), might work.

The focus of this project is to consider strategies and applications of ‘design for social innovation’ through collaborative design methodologies, thus to apply practice-led design methodologies in a ‘field environment’, and to observe and analyse the impact of those designs on community engagement so as to inform a framework for socially oriented design initiatives within urban communities.
