Donna McWilliams, Operations Manager at Electra Learning saw an opportunity to work with an RGU student when she noticed that the business could benefit from having some market research done. This led her to contacting RGU and since then she has been working with a management with HR student to research the e-learning market and develop a survey. We caught up with Donna to discuss her experience of working with RGU.

What prompted you to contact Talent Exchange?

We were looking to have some market research done and thought this would be a good opportunity to involve a student

Can you please describe the process which led to your engagement with a student through Talent Exchange?

We originally contacted Talent Exchange via email and once they had a student available we met with an academic and the student. We went through our requirements and what we were looking for at this meeting and then we emailed back and forth with the student until she started.

Can you describe the project that was undertaken?

The project was to work on some market research. This was mostly e-learning based and the student worked on this until she was satisfied with what she had gathered and she then created a survey for us to use going forward.

What was the outcome of the project?

The student absolutely exceeded our expectations. She was very helpful and professional and communicated with us very well.

How did you work with the student?

We spend a bit of time with her initially, introducing her to the business and she spent some time in the e-learning department to get a feel for what e-learning is and how it works. Once she had settled in she was very good at working independently, using her initiative and communicating progress with us.

How do you think the student benefited?

I think the student benefitted from being in a working environment, especially one which is fast paced and having the opportunity to work in an office and get an understanding of what that is like as she had never worked in an office before.

How do you feel your business benefitted overall?

Electra Learning benefitted from working with a student as it allowed us to carry out tasks we originally couldn’t have committed to.

What would your advice be to others considering working on a project with RGU students?

Be clear on what you want and make sure it’s a good match with the student.

What was the experience of working with RGU?

We had a very good experience working with RGU. We are currently working with a different group of students from RGU and we are keen to continue working with and supporting the Talent Exchange Project.
