Biomedical scientists work in a number of diverse fields including hospital laboratories, government agencies, Universities and research institutions. There are also jobs in manufacturing industry (particularly pharmaceuticals), veterinary services, forensic laboratories, and in the armed forces.

Biomedical Scientist

Biomedical Scientists play an important role in the NHS in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease. As a biomedical scientist you would work in a highly controlled environment, carrying out tasks such as testing blood and urine samples, monitoring the effects of medication, and communicating test results to medical staff.

The Applied Biomedical Science course at RGU is a true fast-track to a brilliant career in any NHS clinical pathology laboratory. This integrated degree has been recognised by both the Institute of the Biomedical Science as well as the Health and Care Professions council. The unique structure of our placements sets us apart from all other Universities. Only at RGU the second year students will have the opportunity to participate in six week placement hospital laboratory placement, rotating through all the departments on weekly basis. You will be making an informed and personalised choice where you would like to be placed for the 14 week placement in stage 3. In addition RGU offers the highest number of placements, per class size.

Some of our graduates will doing research into medical conditions such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes. Others will continue with their education, undertaking teaching qualification, Master level degree, or a PhD. A number of students use Biomedical Science degree as a stepping stone to Dentistry or Medicine.

Typical starting salary: £22,440 - £29,033 (Band 5 of the NHS Agenda for Change payscale)
