Management of Health and Safety
Safety management is about preventing injury by reducing and controlling hazards.
To facilitate the implementation of the Safety Policy, the University has developed a structure of standards, procedures and systems applicable to all sites which forms a coherent Safety Management System. It formalises the responsibilities of managers, supervisors, employees and students, whilst allowing enough flexibility to get the job done.
The University Safety Policy seeks, in the long term, to reduce the number of accidents to zero.
Prior to the start of each financial year the Occupational Health and Safety Committee, in consultation with the Strategic Management Team, will endorse a Safety Plan for that year. This sets out the University's strategic objectives and targets which provides the framework for the development of localised plans in Schools, Departments and Units.
Safety Plans are a key feature in raising standards and promoting awareness of the University's Safety Policy. They encourage the participation of staff, students and contractors and help them to identify targets and objectives. They also allow performance to be monitored against these targets.
Safety issues should be communicated to staff and students on a regular basis. The main objectives of communicating these issues are:
- to seek ways to eliminate unsafe practices and conditions;
- to convey information to all employees and students;
- to obtain views and encourage positive contributions from employees and encourage staff / student liaison;
- to increase safety awareness and obtain commitment to the University Safety Plan;
- to resolve any concerns or problems that emerge.
Items should be resolved at the meeting or passed to the Site Safety Committee for consideration. Feedback on actions should be given as soon as possible to maintain the motivation of the participants. One useful mechanism is through the feedback meetings required as part of the Top Management Team briefings.
