Studies led to artistic independence for student Zoe

An aspiring graphic designer will put her work in the limelight this week as she showcases her final year university projects at an Aberdeen exhibition.

Zoe PowellZoë Powell (21), who is studying Communication Design at RGU's Gray’s School of Art, has a lot to be proud of as she marks the annual Degree Show, which runs until Saturday 24 June.

Zoë, who has lived in Aberdeen her whole life, admits she has dreamt of this moment for as long as she can remember.

She said: “Ever since I was a youngster, I have always wanted to study at Gray’s and follow my interest in art and design – particularly graphics and illustration.

“It has been a wonderful experience being able to build on those beginnings, develop a range of refined skills across disciplines and create a portfolio of work that I can really be proud of.

“Even just in my fourth year, I have worked on projects including book cover designs for Penguin books, a typographic campaign and a branding and packaging brief.”

Whilst Zoë is looking forward to the show, it will mark an end to a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience at university.

“The tutors at Gray’s embed a great deal knowledge in you and each year, you gain more and more independence as you gain the confidence to stretch yourself.

“I was so keen to build on this and experience things from a different perspective that I spent a semester in Düsseldorf as part of the Erasmus programme. It was a great opportunity to go somewhere new, challenge myself and pick up new skills to improve my practice.

“During my fourth year studies, I was also working as a junior designer at Hampton Associates, which has not only given me real-world design agency experience, but I’ve been able to put my design skills to good use on a range of different client briefs – which I look forward to continuing to do post-graduation.”

The Gray’s School of Art Degree Show, which is sponsored by BP for the fifteenth year, runs from 16-24 June and will showcase work by students of all disciplines.
