The Pre-Sessional Programme is for students who want to study at Robert Gordon University (RGU) but have not yet reached the required level in English. The course is designed to help you to improve your language competency and gain an insight into studying at a UK university before beginning a degree programme.

You will receive English language tuition by highly qualified and experienced tutors at a TEF Gold rated university, delivered at our beautiful riverside campus in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Who is the Pre-Sessional English Programme for?

Students who have a conditional or unconditional offer at RGU may be eligible for the Pre-Sessional English Programme.

The programme is only available to full-time international students whose first language is not English and who have an offer for a postgraduate or undergraduate degree course at RGU. It will benefit students who have met the English language requirement for their chosen course at Robert Gordon University. Students in this category can apply to join 5 week programme*.

Benefits of studying the RGU Pre-Sessional English Programme

The Pre-Sessional English Programme is taught here at our campus in Aberdeen, Scotland, where you will have student status for its duration. It is designed to help you to;

  • Meet the minimum language requirements needed for your chosen Robert Gordon University degree programme
  • Improve your reading and writing skills - including how to write in the correct academic style using references and sources
  • Develop your speaking and listening skills - including presentations and seminar discussions
  • Learn important study skills, such as time management and avoiding plagiarism
  • Practice the specific language used by your chosen subject of study in a small and supportive learning environment

Tuition fees include tuition, course materials, access to the library and internet while you will benefit from lots more, including;

  • A meet greet service on arrival, summer social programme and end of course event
  • Activities arranged by to provide an opportunity to learn more about Scottish Culture and a chance to relax and socialise with the other students
  • Opportunities to explore the vibrant city of Aberdeen and the surrounding area, known for its history and natural beauty

English Language Scholar Award

  • Undergraduate students who successfully complete the Pre-sessional English Programme and meet the required grades to progress to the first or second year of the undergraduate degree course, will receive the ‘RGU English Language Scholar Award worth £3500’* towards the first year of undergraduate study
  • Postgraduate students who successfully complete the Pre-sessional English Programme and meet the required grades to progress to the Masters programme, will receive the ‘RGU English Language Scholar Award worth £2500’* towards the tuition fee of the postgraduate course

*The RGU English Language Scholar Award is not available to students from RGU Partner Institutions.

Autumn PSP – KEY POINTS

  • Our Autumn PSP is for students who have an offer to start their MSc in January 2020
  • If you already meet the English requirement but feel like some intensive English teaching would benefit your studies you could do the 5 week programme.
  • You will require a result from an approved  SELT testing centre – such as IELTS, TOEFL iBt or Pearsons PTE
  • If you require a visa to study in the UK you will complete this PSP on a Short Term Study Visa and return home at the end of the English course to secure your Tier 4 visa – we will help you with this!
  • The Student Admissions Service will make you an automatic offer for PSP in with your main MSc offer – if you did not receive this let us know by emailing admissions@rgu.ac.uk
  • Postgraduate students who successfully complete the Pre-sessional English Programme and meet the required grades to progress to the Masters Programme, will receive the ‘RGU English Language Scholar Award worth £2500’* towards the tuition fee of the postgraduate course.

What else do you need to know?

There will be RGU and private accommodation available for you across Aberdeen all within close proximity to either Aberdeen city centre or the university campus. If you prefer to stay in RGU’s own accommodation we can guarantee you a room within our City Centre Woolmanhill complex with a reduced rate of 25% for the duration of your PSP Programme.
